Why I Do This - Elana Rose

Elana Rose's Why I Do This:

Today is Wear Grey Day, a day dedicated to giving visibility to the invisible illness of brain tumors. More than 60,000 people in the UK are living with a brain tumor, and 30 more get diagnosed every day. There are 120 different types of brain tumor, 3 forms of treatment and 0 known causes.

Here’s my why. Why I do the work that I do. Why I am asking others to wear grey today in support of brain tumor research.

In 2000, I battled with CIDP, and at the time I knew very little about clinical trials, but I did feel the outcome. I was wheelchair bound but after IVIG treatment (which at the time was novel) I made an almost complete recovery, and that was all thanks to a clinical trial.

Fast forward to today and I’m still a patient that relies on clinical trials. At the beginning of 2021, I was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor with the only options being surgery or radiotherapy. So again, I look towards clinical trials for new opportunity, new treatment, new hope.

We are all patients who have at some stage felt the difference a clinical trial has made, but I didn’t choose to be part of the industry because of my illness, I chose it because it gives me meaning and a deeper purpose to my job. I’m not academic enough to be part of the cure, but if I can be part of the process, then collectively, every person can make a difference.

I am immensely proud to be part of 4G, not just because of the technology and what we can do for clinical trials but because of every single person behind it. Together, we are part of something bigger.

So join me in raising awareness for brain tumor research across the globe by wearing and sharing grey on social media with #weargrey.

*Brain tumor symptoms: hearing loss, fatigue, sensor and motor loss, personality changes, blurred vision, headaches, dizziness and seizures.
